Browser & Refiner

Browser provides the facility to view data, e.g. terms, their definitions etc., contained in a terminology database or other data resource.

Refiner provides a means of editing this data. This means you can add or remove terms, their definitions and so on. Note that Refiner can be accessed only through Browser.

Browser/Refiner Tutorial

Using Refiner

Start up Browser/Refiner by pressing its button in the System Quirk main menu.

Main Browser window

When entering a new term, activate Refiner by pressing the Refiner button.

Main Refiner window

Press the New Entry key in the Refiner window and you will see that System Quirk presents you with its in-built record format for entering terms:

Note that the dialogue box (the top line banner in the picture above) says Edit: Term. System Quirk is now ready for you to key in your New Term.

Example:

Suppose you have to enter the definition of the term Computer - a preferred term used in British English to denote 'an electronic machine that can be supplied with a program...'. This term belongs to the Information Technology domain and is a noun.

After keying-in the various fields in the record format - Entry, Language, Region, etc. - press the Save button on the bottom left hand corner of the Edit: Term dialog box. The Definition window will then appear (See pages 11 and 12).

The record format, once completed, should appear as below:

Edit: Term dialog box

Each field which has a dropdown symbol (¯ ) indicates that there are a number of alternatives provided by System Quirk.

Note that in the above record format there are a number of additional fields:

Validation: There are three levels of validation in System Quirk:
  Red - yet to be validated by the domain expert and a native speaker;

Yellow- partially validated term; validated by a native speaker but not yet by a domain expert;

Green - fully validated and ready to be used by end-users.

Terminologist: The name of the terminologist entering the data

Entry Date: Date on which the term was entered. System Quirk enters the date automatically.

Modification Date: Not relevant for a new term, but relevant for subsequent usage.

You can either manually enter the term you want to put in or copy it from your files and paste it in Entry by using [Ctrl] + [C] to copy and [Ctrl] + [V] to paste.

Edit: Term dialog box with pull down menu of "region"

Using the terms PC and Computer as examples, you will note that the term PC is different from the term computer, but the definition is the same. You should, therefore, refer to the definition of the word - computer - entered earlier.

Make sure the word entered in "definition" is the same word as in "entry", unless you are entering a synonym which has the same definition as a term you entered beforehand.

You can change the Language, Region, Term Status, Word Class, Domain, Gender, Validation and Terminologist according to the term you enter. Most of these can be changed by selecting the required item from a pull down list. The entry date and modification date will update automatically.

Press the Save button from the Edit: Term window.

The Definition window will then appear. Do not change the entry - just type in the definition, definition source, terminologist (or use cut and paste) and choose the required value for validation.

Edit: Definition dialog box

Press the Save button from the Edit: Definition window.

When the windows disappear, the entry in Browser will show your new term.

Browser window with new term

View Entry shows the term status, word class, domain, gender, definition, validation and context.

If you want to view the definition, for instance, you highlight the definition in the Browser window and change "term" into "definition" in the pull down menu of Type. Then press View Selection.

Reactivate Refiner by clicking on it or by pressing the Refiner button, because it 'hides' behind Browser, when using the Browser.

You can then press Edit Selection in the Refiner window and make any necessary changes.

Before entering any new terms, do not forget to change the "definition" in Type back into "term".

Browser Options

Options available from the Browser window: Entry: An option which allows the user to view all or part of an entry in the term base, i.e. the term and the data associated with it. For retrieval, the user enters the term in order to identify the entry, View Entry button (or hits [RETURN]).
Wildcards can be used in the entry text for retrieval of all matching entries from which the user must choose one to be displayed. If an entry is specified without a wildcard, but no match is found in the database, then Browser tries to find any matches that resemble the given entry (ignoring case and punctuation).

Key: A unique number which is automatically generated for each entry in a given term bank. For retrieval, the user types in the key of the entry to be retrieved then presses the View Entry button (or hits [RETURN]).

Setting Smart to 'infer' via the pull down menu enables relationships to be inferred via other relationships. For example, if an English term does not have a French equivalent, but the German equivalent of the English term does, then that French equivalent is inferred for the English term.

Type refers to the type of Entry. The following types are supported in the default term bank supplied with Browser/Refiner:

Type Description
term words or phrases
concept creating a concept to which terms can be linked (Computer-> hard disk, mouse)
domain the domain to which the term belongs
source references of source documents containing entries
definition the definition of a term
elaboration a contextual example of a term in use

Language displays the language of the current entry or the entry to be retrieved.

If Jump is 'checked', double-clicking on a field or value in the Browser will make the selected value the current entry and update the Browser accordingly. Leaving Jump unchecked produces a new window for each value selected.

If Empties is 'checked', all data related to the term is displayed in the Browser, even those data fields which are empty (i.e., they have no value).

If the selected field contains an entry of the type 'term', View Selection makes the selected entry the current entry and updates the Browser to show the new entry's fields.

The Copy button copies the highlighted region of the Browser onto the clipboard.
