David Boulton, M.A., joined the AI Group in October 1995 and is researching in the field of computational semiotics. The aim of research in this area is to achieve an understanding of the semiotic framework which underpins multimodal communications. At present he is studying means of picture classification, based on the semiotic content of the picture. David also works for ERA Technology, a company which specialises in contract research and development work. His field of activity with ERA is high integrity and safety critical software systems.

Jon Machtynger joined the AI group in January 1998. His current research is centred around early child language development and concept formation. Implementation of a modular connectionist architecture with the facility to lesion both the mixture of experts models as well as the underlying networks will provide insight into language disorders. Jon is also currently employed at Informix Software Ltd where his major focus is on projects using object relational technology to manage content and video across the internet.

Matthew Casey joined the AI Group in January 1999. He is currently researching the development and lesioning of a mixture of experts model of numerical abilities. Once a viable model of subitising and verbal output has been built (based upon work by Tracey Bale), research will concentrate on the lesioning of the model in order to gain insight into disorder. In addition to his research interests, Matthew is currently working for the Telecommunications department of Anite Systems Ltd, specialising in the development of network management client software for the communications industry.
