This is a scheme sponsored by the Women's Engineering Society and UK industrial organisations, which aims to retrain women who have taken a career break, with a view to 'returning' them to work. Dr. Ahmad proposed a programme for training in Artificial Intelligence, focused mainly on the specification and design of an Intelligent Teaching and Learning System (ITLS) for formal (i.e. programming) languages.
The AI Group is curently hosting one Woman Returnee and has successfully 'returned' two women:
Ms. Elizabeth Hogger (1986-87) - now Lecturer in Computing at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, Egham, Surrey.
Dr. Judith Segal (1987-89) - now Associate Lecturer in Computing, University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey.
Dr. M. 'Lena' Tostevin (1996 - ) Current Woman Returnee.
The funding for the first two Returnees lasted three years (September 1986 - September 1989) and had a value of £21,000.
The current Returnee has a grant for a two year re-training (November 1996-October 1998).
