TIWO – Television in Words, audio description

The project reached the end of its EPSRC-funded lifetime in January 2005: you can read the final report here.

However, the work initiated in TIWO is continuing at University of Surrey, and with collaboration from the Round Table members.  There are plans to submit research grant proposals for ‘TIWO 2’ projects later this year.

Audio Description and Computing Narrative in Multimedia Systems

TIWO aims to develop a computational account of narrative in multimedia systems.  We are considering how audio description scripts convey stories originally told in moving images: these scripts are an interesting as a new example of collateral text and a source for generating machine-executable representations of video data, specifically films and television programs.  Click here for an overview of progress to date.

Processing Audio Description

A system is being specified and prototyped with three main functions; to assist in the preparation of audio description scripts; to customise audio description scripts for different audiences; and, to process audio description scripts into machine-executable representations for video retrieval and browsing.  The research team at Surrey is working with a Round Table of audio description professionals from the RNIB, ITFC, BBC and Softel.
